I'm a full time, independent photographer based in the Huddersfield area of West Yorkshire, England.
Apart from commercial work, a great deal of my personal photographic output over the past 30 years has been shaped and inspired by the landscape and people of the Pennine region. Although I travel and photograph extensively, there's both a stubborn determination in me, and an ever changing world that almost dictates that this geographically small area will continue to provide me with images well into the future.
I'm also determined to continue taking photographs on film, and the making of prints in a traditional chemical darkroom. Print making in the darkroom is very important to me. It's still an incredible way to make photographs - a real 'hands on', and quite exciting antidote to the computer and screen that's now accepted as being part of photography the world over.
I also regularly introduce students to film and the darkroom way of print making via work experience, and despite my personal mission to keep the darkroom alive in the minds of newer generations, I'm often surprised by the enthusiasm, curiosity and desire there is from young people in wanting to produce work in the unfashionably dingy and stinky darkroom. Long may it continue.
I do actually feel a sense of privilege that I caught the last 20 years of pre-digital film based photography in the 1980's and 90's. Now for me, it seems entirely natural to use both film and digital - and both in various formats, although a self-imposed limitation is that it's film for black and white, and digital for colour. No exceptions.
My commercial work is with museums, fine art, architecture - and anything that comes my way in-between. Along side this varied and involving work I set myself personal photographic projects - some of which are on my website - and I always like to have a couple of projects on the go at any one time.
This blog is mainly a collection of random ideas and images, often photographed outside the constraints of a project or commercial work, or simply because I find an image that whispers in my ear so to speak, or means something to me - anything - at any time.
